Picasso
the Genius of the 20th Century, at Kunsthaus Zürich
Pablo Picasso – a brilliant artist, for many people the towering genius of the 20th century. No other artist enjoyed such widespread fame during his lifetime, none influenced modern art as strongly as he did. In the autumn of 1932, the Kunsthaus Zürich held the first institutional exhibition of Picasso’s work, showing the broadest retrospective assembled up to that date. To mark the centenary of the Kunsthaus, this sensational show has been reconstructed to a large extent, allowing visitors to relive this key chapter in the adventure of modern art. Picasso’s oeuvre bundles the most important styles and influences, throwing them into sharp focus.

The artist evidently took great pleasure in repeatedly re-inventing himself. In accessible and entertaining commentaries in German, English, French and Italian, the audio guide by tonwelt explains Picasso’s versatile oeuvre, covering the blue and the pink periods, his ground-breaking Cubism, and the Classicism and Surrealism of the 1920s and early 1930s. The audio tour also gives interesting background facts about the retrospective show in 1932. This was another area in which Picasso was the pioneer of a trend-setting development: |
the idea that a living artist curates his own retrospective in collaboration with the museum where it is to be shown, his dealers and collectors, and thus documents his own view of his oeuvre. Naturally, the words of the rhetorically gifted master himself have their place among the historical quotes in the audio guide, alongside the views of Picasso’s contemporaries, companions and lovers. |
We at tonwelt are delighted to be collaborating with the Kunsthaus Zürich for the eleventh time and we would like to express our gratitude for this proof of confidence and satisfaction with our services. Hearty congratulations to a highly respected institution on reaching its centenary, from all of the team! |
