Boldini in Impressionist Paris

The Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara, Italy presents an exhibition of the Paris works of Giovanni Boldini. This great innovator in the art of portraiture was born 1842 in Ferrara and died in 1931 in Paris. The exhibition opened in the Palazzo dei Diamanti on September 20, 2009.

The works on display were gathered together from well-known collections in Europe and the U.S. They illustrate the variety of subject matter and techniques Boldini used. Unlike many retrospectives of the artist’s work, the Ferrara exhibition focuses on Boldini’s formative earlier years of experimentation in Paris from 1871 to 1886.

Thank to tonwelt’s audio tour, visitors to the exhibition can now hear, in Italian and English, detailed information on the history and background of the paintings for additional insight into the Paris years that were so important to Boldini’s development as an artist.

The exhibition is a cooperative venture between Ferrara Arte and the Clark Art Institute. It will move to the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts on February 14, 2010, making it one of the first exhibitions of this important artist in an American museum.
